Responsible Care®

Responsible Care^® is the chemical industry's commitment to the continual improvement of environmental, health, safety and security performance. Since 1988, companies participating in the program have reduced emissions 70 percent while increasing production 25 percent. Additionally, the incidence of worker injury and illness among Responsible Care companies has declined 51 percent since 1990.

Marathon adopted Responsible Care^® in 2000 as part of a partnership program between the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA) and the American Chemical Council (ACC).

Marathon's business units using RCMS^® are working towards third-party certification of their systems. Seven sites have received certification. Two remaining sites and Marathon Pipe Line are scheduled to complete the process by year-end 2009. As a Responsible Care^® company, Marathon pledges to operate its business in accordance with the Responsible Care Guiding Principles.
