Environmental Stewardship
Environmental stewardship is the ability of a company or entity to establish and maintain high standards of health, environmental and safety performance as part of its business process. Marathon supports various climate change and conservation programs that are important to sustainable development.
Some examples of environmental stewardship programs:
- Marathon participates in the American Petroleum Institute (API) Climate Challenge, a program that strives to improve refinery energy efficiency by 10 percent between 2002 and 2012. Marathon estimates its refineries increased energy efficiency by 4.5 percent between 2002 and 2006.
- Marathon is a partner in the Global Gas Flaring Reduction Partnership, which encompasses standards to eliminate venting and reduce flaring of associated gas. The Company's Equatorial Guinea project, completed in 2005 is an example of progress and commitment to this standard. As a direct result of this project, flare volumes in Equatorial Guinea have decreased by more than 90 percent.
- In Gabon, Marathon has participated in the National Park Program project to protect large expanses of the Gabonese rainforest.
- In other areas of operation, such as the U.S. and Gabon, Marathon has instituted a Pipeline Right-of-Way Revegetation Program.
- Marathon is involved in a partnership with The Nature Conservancy and other public and private organizations to help eradicate the invasive, non-native tamarisk tree from the Colorado River watersheds.
- Marathon employee teams have transformed more than 1,400 acres of Marathon wooded areas, grassland, cropland, lakes and wetlands into habitat certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC).
