Rule of Law
Marathon values the 'Rule of Law' -- the process by which the authority of a government at all levels is exercised in accordance with written laws and well established procedures. As such, the Company respects local laws and promotes the principles of justice, fairness and equality wherever we operate. We will work as appropriate and within our sphere of influence to encourage local authorities to observe rule of law. Marathon will also advocate, to the extent practical, against arbitrary decisions. We are ever mindful that we are subject to local legal systems, and work to balance adherence to local legal systems with conducting our operations in compliance with applicable U.S. laws and regulations; regardless of location.
Examples of 'Rule of Law' activities include:
- Environmental permitting workshops: Marathon has periodically provided environmental permitting workshops for employees, contractors and representatives from applicable state agencies. For instance, the Garyville, Louisiana, refinery has frequently engaged Louisiana environmental staff on permit processes. These exchanges have benefited all participants with a clearer comprehension of complex permitting requirements.
- International Bar Association conferences: Marathon has sponsored law conferences in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, expressly for building an increased understanding of the international legal framework governing business operations. The conferences targeted representatives of the EG Ministry of Mining and Energy and local bar association members.
- Code of Business Conduct: Marathon's long held value for business integrity is fundament to the 'Rule of Law' element. In addition to a strong Code of Business Conduct, with elements providing guidance on conflicts of interest, gifts and entertainment, and reporting unethical conduct (whistle-blowing policy), Marathon's Code also addresses anti-corruption laws. Marathon provides annual training to employees on the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and similar legislation from other countries.
