In 2007, Marathon continued its strategies to attract and retain employees, develop individual and team capabilities, and accelerate organizational success through its people. The Company employed more than 29,500 people at year-end, primarily in the U.S. Approximately 19,500 of these were SSA personnel, most of whom worked at the Company's retail marketing outlets. The workforce included 1,487 newly hired full-time employees. This does not include newly hired SSA sales workers.
The turnover rate in the U.S. (excluding SSA employees) was 7 percent, compared to 5.7 percent in 2006. Outside the U.S., the turnover rate was 2.8 percent, compared to 5.8 percent in 2006. Marathon experienced 607 workforce retirements, resignations and terminations during the year. This includes 273 retirements, approximately 15 percent more retirements than were recorded in 2006. Turnover among SSA sales workers was approximately 147 percent, compared to 166 percent in 2006.
Employment Practices
Non-discrimination and Equal Opportunity
Marathon's objective is to ensure that current and prospective employees have
equal opportunities in all aspects of the employment relationship. The Company's
policy is to select, develop and promote employees based on the individual's
ability and job performance, and to comply with all applicable laws and
regulations prohibiting employment discrimination.
New supervisor training at Marathon covers U.S. federal employment laws.
Marathon informs all of its employees about the resources available for discussing equal employment and workplace harassment matters. Employees can discuss employment and harassment issues with their supervisor, Human Resources consultant or the ombudsman, or make anonymous reports to the Integrity Helpline. In addition, representatives of the Equal Employment Opportunity Compliance Office are available via e-mail and, in the U.S., a toll-free hotline. All reports are investigated internally, and by external investigators if needed.
Employee Diversity Programs
Promoting diversity and inclusion in the workforce is consistent with Marathon's
commitment to treat employees with dignity, respect and fairness. As the Company
continues to expand globally, diversity of people and ideas allows it to compete
more successfully.
The Executive Diversity Officer's Committee demonstrates leadership and commitment to diversity and engages with the Corporate Development and Diversity office. This office oversees diversity programs across the enterprise and supports the work of Diversity councils and teams throughout the Company. To raise awareness of diversity issues, council members participate in programs related to training and education, culture and values, communications, and retention and career development.
